Visitors not allowed to see loved ones at Butner prison for 19 days and counting, officials won't say why

Family and friends of inmates at a Butner prison have not been able to visit their loved ones since Sept. 6.

"All visiting at this facility has been suspended until further notice," the Federal Bureau of Prisons' (FBOP) website said.

WRAL News reached out to the FBOP to ask what prompted this, but the bureau would not give us an answer.

Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Butner II initiated "modified operations" on Sept. 6, according to a spokesperson for the FBOP.

The FBOP said "modified operations" refer to a temporary change to some institution operations that may include movement, programs and/or services.

"Wardens may establish controls or implement temporary security measures to ensure the good order and security of their institution, and occasionally with minimal warning," the FBOP spokesperson said.

"Ordinarily, institutions remain on modified operations to thoroughly investigate an incident and ensure the safety of employees and individuals in our custody."

The decision to suspend visitation is made by the warden on a case-by-case basis, according to the FBOP spokesperson. The FBOP said suspending visitation is sometimes necessary for the safety of inmates, employees and the public.

"The institution will return to normal operations, including visitation, as soon as possible," the FBOP said.

Family members can communicate with loved ones via the U.S. Postal Service. Mail is collected and delivered to individuals every day, Monday through Friday. For more information, go to bop.gov.
