The air has been very dry.
Low dew points mean low moisture in the air. This winter, dew points have been unusually low across central North Carolina.
Dew point data from the Southeast Regional Climate Center (based here in the Triangle) shows:
- January ranked as the fifth-driest January on record at Raleigh-Durham International Airport
- Overall, this winter so far ranks as the ninth-driest winter on record at RDU
Some days, dew points have even dropped below zero, which is extremely dry for central North Carolina. Low dew points also correlate with a higher fire danger when coupled with gusty winds.
Unfortunately, there’s no strong signal that this pattern flips anytime soon.
So keep the lotion, lip balm and humidifier close by. Your skin will thank you.
