Clayton police said a person died after they were hit by a train on Tuesday.
Officers said an Amtrak train struck a person who was crossing the tracks around 6 p.m. at McCullers and Stallings streets

Authorities said train number 79 was traveling from New York City to Charlotte. The train was stopped in Clayton with its load of passengers for two hours before continuing to Raleigh, its next stop.
Officers have not released the name of the person who was hit. The investigation is ongoing.
The crash marks the third time in a year that a person was struck by a train near downtown Clayton.
There were two incidents in August. A UNC Wilmington student was fatally struck by an Amtrak train near Front Street and O’Neil Street, and a driver died when he tried to go around lowered crossing arms at a railroad crossing at the intersection of Central Street and Main Street.
