The search for a Carrboro man ended tragically after authorities said he drowned in Jordan Lake, the third drowning at the lake since May and the fifth this year.
Eduardo Martinez, 52, of Carrboro, drowned Tuesday while swimming in Jordan Lake in an area near the intersection of Martha’s Chapel Road and Farrington Road, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Martinez was visiting the lake with family, who observed him struggling in the water but were unable to help him.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the incident at 8:47 p.m. After emergency crews searched for Martinez, his body was recovered late Tuesday night.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office uses a boat to patrol a portion of the lake, but drowning incidents still occur.
WRAL News asked Capt. Phillip Richard with the sheriff's office how response times can be improved when there is a report of someone in distress in the water.
"A lot of that is planning ahead," said Richard. "Know where you are going and know where you are at in the time of emergency [so] you are not trying to figure that out."
Brent Jester, who visits Jordan Lake regularly, told WRAL News he loves being on the water.
"It is awesome, it is a cheap, quick getaway," he said.
Jester said he wears a life jacket and informs everyone on his boat of their location while on the lake – in case someone needs to call for help.
“I told the guys if anything happens to me, this is where you need to go ... remember these landmarks and the camp site," Jester said.
Deputies stress swimmers and boaters can reduce the risk of drowning by wearing a life jacket, swimming in designated areas and looking for signage to know where you are swimming. Try to stay at locations where first responders can easily reach you.
"We try to push people to use the designated swim areas," Richard said. "Those are areas that are carved out by state parks that are designated swim areas like Parks Creek, Seaforth Beach Area, Ebenezer Beach area ... that will make it clear for us if you are using the designated swim areas.”
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Martinez family to provide the necessary support and assistance.
"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Eduardo Martinez during this very difficult time," said Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson. "Losing a loved one in such a sudden and tragic manner is devastating, and we are here to support the family in any way we can."
Other drownings have been reported recently at Jordan Lake.
In June, a man drowned while fishing with friends.In May, a 16-year-old from Winston-Salem drowned while celebrating a friend's birthday at the Ebenezer Picnic Area in New Hill.
With the upcoming holiday weekend expected to bring increased activity to Jordan Lake, Roberson emphasized the importance of water safety and adherence to swimming regulations.
"As we approach the busy holiday weekend, we urge everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying the natural resources our county has to offer," Roberson said. "Swimming in designated areas of Jordan Lake and following safety guidelines can prevent such heartbreaking incidents. Please be mindful of the dangers and take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for all."
The sheriff’s office is urging the public to keep in mind the following safety guidelines:
- Always swim in designated areas.
- Use life jackets and other flotation devices.
- Supervise children closely.
- Be aware of water conditions and weather forecasts.
- Follow all posted signs and regulations.
