Repairs to a major sewer main break on Tryon Road in Raleigh are not expected to be completed until the end of next week, extending the estimated timeline to reopen eastbound lanes, according to officials with Raleigh Water.

Crews implemented an emergency road closure in the 4400 block of Tryon Road near the intersection of Brisk Gallop Way on Sunday. On Friday, crews reopened one eastbound lane of Tryon Road.

"It adds about 10-15 minutes depending on the traffic at the time of day," said Charles Parrish, Vice President of Agriculture at the Food Shuttle Farm. 

The group distributes food to those facing hunger locally. Parrish said coordinating volunteer shifts with the road closures has been challenging.

"It was definitely a little bit of a scramble that first day," Parrish said. "As people have become aware and gotten familiar, it's been a little less of a disruption."

Raleigh Water expects to reopen one eastbound lane by Friday. Drivers say that would be slight a relief as the first day for most Wake County Public Schools is Monday, potentially adding more buses and cars with students going to class. 

"There are definitely a couple schools on both sides of the construction that it's going to impact. So, hopefully they can get it finished before school starts because there is going to be a big issues with that," said Tylar Nicklis, who lives near the main break. 

"With the first day of school for many Wake County Public Schools approaching next week, Raleigh Water has already coordinated with their transportation department to make sure parents are aware of any temporary changes to bus stops," said a statement from the city of Raleigh.

Raleigh Water officials say the broken pipe was installed in 1998. Sewer gas eroded the top of the pipe made out of ductile iron.

Crews are replacing it with pipes made of materials not affected by sewer pipes. They note the project requires "significant excavation."

The repairs come as other broken pipes have snarled traffic in other areas of Raleigh.

Last month, a water main broke two days in a row. It forced the closure of Cameron Street in the Village District. Crews blamed aging pipes for the deterioration and crumbling road.

Several water and sewer lines are set to be replaced across Raleigh Water's service area under a Capital Improvement Project listed on the utility's website. 

Nicklis says the closures are having unforeseen impacts on neighbors. 

"My neighbor just ordered a DoorDash and had to pick it up down the street because it wasn't able to get delivered to his house," Nicklis said. 

Raleigh officials note the repairs on Tryon Road will not impact water and sewer service to nearby customers.
